Man Playing Guitar

Mobile Services

Our specialty is coming to your favorite location and recording you - right where you feel at home!  We are happy to come to your normal practice space or performance venue for a professional studio quality recording session, and also can record any live performances!

Why record at your location versus in a studio?  Professional quality recordings can be obtained in many locations outside the studio, and musicians will always feel more comfortable and at-home in their own space!  We have many techniques to optimize the sound of any space, and deal with the challenges of room acoustics all the time. So, why would you go to a strange uncomfortable space that you aren't used to, affecting your sound and your groove?  Stay put, and let us come to you, and get your unique, distinct sound, in your space!

For Live Events, in addition to recording your live performances, we can also manage all your live sound needs at any event!  Just let us know the details of the venue, and we will coordinate directly with them, so you don't have to worry about anything except making the music!

Let us handle all the recording equipment, and you just handle the instruments and artistic talent!  We will provide as a part of the recording package: all equipment including cables, microphones, stands, DI boxes, computer and recording technology, etc. - basically anything and everything needed to actually record your performance!

We are also happy to bring additional things needed for you to perform, such as instruments and non-recording-equipment (like amps or speakers) for you to use, subject to availability and small additional rental fees.

Please reach out to us for any questions or request a quote!

In-Studio  Services

In addition to our mobile services, we of course offer in-studio recording by appointment, if you do not have a preferred space available!  However, as said above - your best sound will be where you are the most comfortable playing!

In our studio, we can do much more that just recording - we can compose music for your projects; mix, master, and post-production edit your projects for that professional finish; and more!

If you have a questions about what we can do for you, please don't hesitate to reach out to us or request a quote!  We are always happy to discuss different projects and different budgets!

Distribution and
Publishing - Administration

We've tried to make the below process as easy-to-read as possible; however honestly the below information is lengthy and complicated...because realistically so is the distribution and publishing-administration process (if you're trying to do it yourself)!

So, to save you the headache of having to actually read all of this, please feel free to reach out to us, and we can walk you through the entire process of how to properly get your music released, actually get paid for your songs, and why you should choose Tim Farr Music to help you with all of this!

If you do want some more info about the ins and outs of getting your music out there, then see below:

The Distribution

and

Publishing-Administration Process

Now that you've recorded your music, now what?  Now it's time to distribute your music...and make sure you get paid for it of course!

First, it's time to find a distribution software that can actually connect your music with services like Spotify and Apple Music/iTunes and Amazon Music.  And, you will have to verify that the metadata within each song is correct, so that way each service knows who to pay!  Depending on the company you go with, distributors can charge $100+, in addition to taking sometimes up to half of the royalties that your music makes - just for getting your music released! In addition, many distributors charge a yearly fee to keep your music up!

Cover Songs: If you have done any covers, then before you can even distribute your music, you would have to contact the original artists' publishers...these distribution programs aren't going to do that for you automatically!  You will need to obtain a mechanical license from the publisher (if the publisher is willing to work with you), or pay a mechanical licensing company a bunch of money to negotiate the license for you...or you can know your way around the complicated federal copyright laws and obtain a compulsory license without having to pay an outside agency.  But you're not done yet - once you've done that, you have to account for each and every cent of royalties that you make from this cover AND send detailed accountings to the publisher of that original song!

Next Steps: Now, in order to get paid when your music is played on the radio or at restaurants, stores, clubs, etc., you also have to register it with a Performing Rights Organization (like ASCAP or BMI).  Some of these Performing Rights Organizations keep 50% of the royalties to "give to  your publisher", which often means that without someone to claim all that money, it just sits in the pockets of those companies.  These companies claim that they are on your side, when in reality they are more than happy to pocket the money - you will quickly find out that these companies are VERY good at collecting royalties from each and every place that they are due...but not so good at actually giving them out to the artist.  They want money, so they have no incentive to actually distribute it out to you!  You have to know where to look, and how to demand what you're owed!

Legal wise, in order to protect from someone stealing your music and claiming it as their own (and in order to file lawsuits against anyone that does that), you must file your music with the United States Copyright Office.  If you want to do this yourself, you will have to either navigate the complicated U.S. Government Copyright Office website and know exactly what type of registration it is (and possibly end up overpaying if you do not register the exact right way), or pay someone to file the copyright for you.

Then, you also have to track the royalties that each organization pays for the song, and most importantly figure out how to get that money into your hands (again, most of these companies are not incentivized to give you your money, but will collect it and hold it until you ask them for it).

What about if someone hears your song and wants to cover it?  Now you have to issue a mechanical license that complies with federal law, and handle all the accounting for that too!

Sound complicated?  Starting to get overwhelmed?

Tim Farr Music can handle all your publishing administration!

For starters, we do not take any ownership rights away from you like many publishers do, we just have you grant us the administrative rights - you just sign a contract letting us do the paperwork side of things that you don't want to do anyway!

For our electronic distribution, we charge just a fraction of what these other companies would charge you (starting at just $12) because we know how to work directly with the U.S. Copyright office, performing rights organizations, distribution networks, and other publishers directly - cutting out the middle man and saving you fees!

And, if you record your music with us, we will cover the Distribution costs for you, and as usual just charge "at-cost" for any additional fees!

In addition, we will charge the Copyright registrations and any Performing Rights Organization's licensing fees "at-cost" to you, keeping money in your pocket!

And, you do not have to ever pay a yearly fee to us for distribution or publishing-administration!

To cover our administrative fees through the years, we retain just 5% of the total royalties made from non-physical media (streams, downloads, plays on the radio, plays at store, etc.); leaving you with 95% of your total revenue!

For physical media (like CDs), the way royalties works is different depending on the situation (depending on if you purchase the CD up front, or if we distribute it directly to a commercial store. you keep 80%-100% of your CD sales), so see our rate sheet for more details regarding that!

What this means however, is that we don't get paid for publishing-administration unless you get paid, because we cannot receive our royalties until they get paid out to you (and we keep a separate bank account to hold royalties versus our normal account, and no payments besides royalty distributions are made out of that account, so we literally do not get paid until you get paid)!

One of the best things for you about this pricing model, is that there is no yearly fee to you, so there is absolutely no risk of you losing money over the years!  If you're songs don't make a lot of money, that's okay - there is no minimum amount that we need to get paid, just the set percentage rate based upon how often your music gets played/sold.  We won't take down your music for not paying us a yearly fee like many other distributors would!

So, all-in-all, you can rest assured that Tim Farr Music will fight for you, that we are on your side, and that we will work hard to get all the royalties that you deserve paid to you!  And most importantly, we can handle all the paperwork, while you handle what you love - the music!
